Rats - Drowned and the REAL thing!!!

A beautiful morning followed by a downpour this afternoon, at school finishing time obviously. That's British weather for you. Here's my gorgeous drowned rat/panda.
And the not so gorgeous one. Looking out of the window this evening I saw this sight. A rat clinging onto the bird feeder having a good old feed. I can just about cope with manic squirrels but definitely not a rat so the bird feeder is now bagged up and in the bin. I think the downpour has flushed this critter out from wherever it usually lives.

I bought myself a filofax today. It's the first one I've ever had. I'm an avid notebook buyer/list writer but have never owned one of these before. I've discovered some people make a hobby out of them, with stickers, washi tape, coloured pens etc. I love the sound of doing all that but at the moment I'm not sure how to go about it. Does anybody out there own one and do you have any tips?
Dolls and pencil cases are now all packed up and ready to be posted. It's been fun but I'm all knitted out for now.
Just had a quick evening trip to The Fort to try and find something new to wear for Mark's birthday this weekend. No luck though, so rather than wandering around aimlessly tomorrow I'm now going to spend an hour trawling the net to see if I can see anything, then I'll know where to head.

What's the betting I end up digging something out of the wardrobe.

  1. Welcome to the world of Filofax. I've written about my little collection on my blog a few times, you can find one of my posts (with links to a few others) here:- http://jo-throughthekeyhole.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/a-tour-of-my-filofax-crimson-malden.html
Take a look at Philofaxy blog:- http://philofaxy.blogspot.co.uk/ you'll find lots of information and articles about Filofaxes there.

    1. Thanks for the links Jo, it's really appreciated. I've read your post giving a tour of your filofax, it's interesting to see how people use them. I'm going to take a couple of days to have a think about what to do and how to do it and I'll probably start with something very simple like birthdays lol. I'll open it up tomorrow and show a couple of inside shots. I've no idea what mine is called I just like the daisy pattern - that's how much a filofax virgin I am haha - but it looks fairly similar to yours. xx

  2. Oh, poor Amy doesn't look very happy at all, does she? And who can blame her?

I've heard that rats tend to nest in ivy. In fact, there was ivy growing along the back fence when I first bought my house and one of the first things I did was remove all the ivy.

Your knitted dolls look so cute! I'm sure they'll be loved by the children who receive them.

    Enjoy your filofax.

    1. Oh no Bless don't say that. The ivy has always been there, but I usually cut it back, just haven't got around to it yet - and now I'll probably never go near it again. Even having dogs doesn't help, they're happy to bark at things from the safety of indoors but I don't think either of them would be very good at rat catching.

The dolls will be on their way tomorrow. I might moan about the others messing the house up but I've contributed lately with all the knitting and sewing that's been going on :) xx

  3. OMG I would die if I saw a rat. We don't have them here but I do remember them around the River Irk when I was a kid. Years ago I would put out bird feeders and then got an invasion of mice so the bird feeder went in the same place as yours!!
I've tried the Filofax thing a couple of times over the years. I'm all gung ho to start and then I found it was a bit of a pain. Would forget to write things in it, and I found it ended up being so bulky and heavy and didn't fit in my purse that I would give up on it. Hope you have better success!

    1. I think the downpour will have brought the rat out but even so no more bird feeders in the garden from now on. It makes me shudder just thinking about it. The maths tutor was here when this was happening and his wife has 2 pet rats - can you imagine!

I've never had a filofax, even when they were all the rage in the 80's. I get through loads of notebooks though so this concept of keeping one thing with all your notes in is totally new to me. I'll let you know how I get on with it. xx

  4. even though Amy looks far from happy (but still dramatically fabulous), I am so jealous of your downpours. Been too still and hot here this week, I am dying for some good rain.

Yuck to the rat on the feeder. What a nasty sight, I wouldn't be happy seeing that either. As for where it came from, those things are everywhere, we just happily don't see them that often. I've never known them to live in ivy (just as well as it grows in our garden and on the back of the house!), but they are always about. Especially when there is food around.

I've had my Filofax for years now. It's a small Pocket Finsbury (I think), pink of course, and I use it all the time. Never got into the washi tape and stickers thing, I just use it to keep myself organised, but I know some people are absolutely crazy for doing all of that. Keeping is simple suits me, and actually, you've totally reminded me I need to order 2017 refills soon! Blimey, that comes around quicker each year.

Hope you find something to wear for the weekend. new or from your wardrobe. I'm trying to be good and wear stuff that I have stashed away. One US vlogger calls it 'shopping your closet' and since hearing her words in my head, I've done just that! (Ok, with a few new bits thrown in, but mostly from my wardrobe ha ha).

    1. We're back to hot here this morning, but it's not sunny, just overcast and clammy. Jungle weather I call it.

Oh my goodness, I couldn't believe it when I saw the rat clinging onto the feeder. I've never heard the ivy thing but I've heard they live under decking and we've got plenty of that. I've got a load of washing to hang out but I need to stand on the decking and go near the ivy so I'm torn!

Yes, I've watched a couple of vlogs about filofaxes and some of them look more like scrapbooks, there seems to be hardly any space left to write anything, athough they do look very colourful and fun. I love a sticker or two so but I think I might keep it simple and buy some dots and maybe one roll of washi tape, although I've yet to figure out what people do with it or is it just for decoration?

I've been shopping this morning and not only have I found something to wear I've had a bit of a splurge. Doesn't happen very often so I'm not feeling too guilty. My wardrobe is pretty basic so shopping the closet wouldn't work for me, but it sounds good advice if you have stuff that you've forgotten about. xx

    2. ooh, decking, hadn't thought of that! Yes, that's quite possible! Horrible creatures.
sent you an email at last. trying not to drip water all over the laptop. Apparently my attempt to drown an annoying big fat fly by trapping it in the shower and switching it on was a Massive Fail! ;o) xx

    3. My friends mum and dad had them under their decking. I can't think about it too much or I wouldn't go into the garden at all!

Haha, to the shower. Maybe a fly swat would be less messy. I bought a pack from the £1 shop and we have one in most rooms, mainly because Thomas doesn't do insects - another quirk of his for the list :) I shouldn't laugh but he screams like a girl if anything comes near him and he always shouts BEE even if it isn't. You should see how quickly he shoots out of him room if a fly gets in there. Bless him. xx

  5. oh that reads wrong. Sounds like I'm calling people crazy for using stickers etc. Nope. Crazy about doing it in an enthusiastic manner is what I meant. Just to clarify! :O) x

    1. Haha, no I got what you meant. I don't think I would be overly into using stickers or tape, but I quite like the idea of buying the 'pretties' just in case haha. xx

  6. ( I'm reading backwards through your posts! ) I've missed so much! Poor Amy! She still looks gorgeous! British weather!!
But EWWWWWWWWW I'm now in panic mode especially with my bird feeder all you can eat buffet!!! The knitted dolls are adorable. I hope there were breathing holes in the plastic! I love the little ones with bonnets on. They are darling. Natalie who has the weightloss DVD does notebook beautification things and I know Mum of Mum blog does. I don't write many lists. My Filofax is in a drawer with the calendar birds in it about 5 years out of date! I'd say good luck with the clothes buying but because I'm reading backwards I already know you found something!!

    1. Hahaha. Couldn't believe it when I saw it clinging on having a right good nosh. I've always got a list on the go, don't think I could function properly without one. I've bought a pack of coloured dots and some gel pens. If I come across some washi tape I might pick some up but that'll be it. xx

  7. Oh, your rat just makes me shudder. He's so bold to be out in the middle of the day like that! I never thought of the rats going after the hanging bird feeder. I thought it would be safe hanging from a wire like that. Thanks for the info. I'll be putting my feeder in the bin as well. I've been hearing noises outside at night, so I'm on the warpath!

    1. Must admit after the initial "what the heck is that hanging off my bird feeder" I was surprised he was quite happy to be out in broad daylight having a nibble at the nuts. We have a lot of cats around here as well so he was especially brave. No more bird feeders here I'm afraid. Not that they got a look in really with the manic squirrel! xx
