Blackpool Illuminations

We've made a spur of the moment decision to go to Blackpool Illuminations tonight.

That means fish & chips, the amusement arcade and a walk down the front.

Nobody, including Thomas, goes to bed before 10pm so the fact that it's a school night doesn't really matter.

Setting off in half an hour and looking forward to it.

  1. Ooh! I love Blackpool illuminations. I'm excited for you. Have some freshly made hot donuts too. Make sure you bring us all back a stick of rock! Have a fab time. X

    1. Hi Jules. I love the smell of the donut stands but these days just the thought of eating one brings on indigestion. The lights are a bit of a tradition at Number 38. There aren't many years we've not been since Amy was born. The displays at Bispham end are really good but they tend to wane off as you go further down the front. However, through the eyes of a child they are probably fantastic. Love it or hate it, you can't beat a bit of Blackpool. xx

  2. Oh, that brings back such memories from when I was a kid! I remember the last time we went, probably 1965, we stayed in a B&B overnight because it was such a long way (50-60 miles) from our house in Hr. Blackley!lol There were mum and dad and 5 kids in one room, cause we couldn't afford 2 rooms! I do remember a fabulous breakfast the next morning though, and of course, the illuminations were fabulous. I think it's amazing that they still have them. Funny thing is before I retired I was driving that distance there and back to work everyday (26 miles each way) and thought nothing of it!!!!

    1. Hi Janice, yes, it did seem a long way when I was little. Mind you the cars probably couldn't do more than 50 miles an hour back then and that would be pushing it! We never stayed over - we probably couldn't even afford one room lol.

I do know it was a major outing though and to be travelling at night was thrilling. I can remember going one year, I was probably about 5 or 6 and we set off in our PJ's, with blankets, pillows and a flask. The cars were queuing on the motorway to come off at Blackpool. In the end we did what a lot of other people started doing - turned around and came home. Very disappointing but we probably wouldn't have got through them until the early hours. Memories eh? xx
